What’s in a name?
Tammy at “Just Enough, and Nothing More” has an incredibly reasonable post on the definition of homeschooling. While there are a variety of definitions, she concludes that:

The one place that the term “homeschooling” does not belong is in federal laws.
She further points out that any such definition would depend on each state and even then it may not be clearly defined. What I was most impressed with was her following observation/conclusion:

Everyone has their own idea of what “homeschooling” is, and what it should be. But at the end of the day, it ends up being the decision of the person or organization using the word on how to use it.
I can’t understand why she hasn’t been tarred and feather yet by the powers that be in the homeschooling community for such blasphemy. I’m always amazed at how much time and energy is spent by homeschoolers arguing over this and scarring off people who in general support parental rights and choice in education.
Since they’re so concerned with potential government control over homeschooling, why not use an already accepted modification with regard to organizations and government and call themselves “ngo homeschoolers?” If nothing else, it would give people the opportunity to ask what’s the deal with the “ngo” before having someone jump all over them for using the term “homeschooling” inappropriately.
