December 9th, 2006
First, you’ve got to read this:
Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Latest News:
Cheerleading mess a team effort Give us some willful teens; give us some enabling adults – what do we got? A mess.
And who’s reaction do they go for? The students and parents.
Parents and students in McKinney Independent School District had mixed reactions about the recent decision to put McKinney North High School Principal Linda Theret and Assistant Principal Richard Brunner on paid administrative leave with the possibility of termination.
Why didn’t they ask the teachers who work there?

As a parent of a daughter who was a cheerleader 10 years ago….which really doesn’t seem like that long ago…… we had to sign agreements, as did our daughters, that they were to never wear their uniforms outside of games and school sponsored activites, etc. or they would be off the team. (ex. can’t wear uniforms to mall or shopping) The girls promised not to drink, smoke or do drugs and if they did, they were off the team. The girls promised to adhere to the law of the land or they were off the team. They parents and the girls signed the same agreements. The sponsors were supported by the parents and the girls loved her.
I think this cheerleading thing is just the beginning of seeing the truth of how parents treat their children today.(of every age) Kids are never held responsible for their actions and now there are no good teachers who will teach the future leaders (?????) of our country. By allowing these children to have their way and disrespect everyone and everything, the parents are only giving the children an opening to the beginnning of failure.

The super Tom “I really don’t give a crap” Crowe in the MISD would trample any teacher who spoke out against the administration.
And there is a cheerleader constitution, but when it comes to inappropriate behavior, one of the girls mother has appealed and won the fight, because “inappropriate behavior” is too ambiguous.
Bottom line, this is a small subset of girls and parents and it is not indicative of the rest of the squad, their parents, or McKinney Texas. If this had been my child, I would have taken her off the squad myself, and made her wish she had never even thought about doing something like this.
NO ACCOUNTABILITY and they don’t seem to care.

The girls are to blame, the parents are to blame.
Period.
What, do these kids live in a vacuum? Are you going to tell me that they’d no concept of right and wrong?
It’s crap. They needed to be thrown off the team, and expelled.
The parents? That they played advocate for their daughters, instead of parent, is the core of the problem. I’m not keen on holding parents responsible for the actions of their children, but in a situation like this, I’d have no problem with making an exception.
Finally: The administration for this school should be unseated immediately. For them to act with so little spine, caving to the whims of bitchy parents to protect, and therefore underwrite and endorse, the bitchy behavior of their daughters is beyond reproach.
As an aside, however, I’m quite certain that this is not an isolated incident. If you are one of the unlucky folks who takes their vacations during the period when Disney World hosts the cheerleader competition in the parks, then you know that foul-mouthed, rude, obscene and otherwise unacceptable behavior is quite commonplace for cheerleaders.

These girls should have been paddled the same as the cheerleaders at other schools are. If they break the rules a few swats with the paddle always gets them back in line.

THE RULES ARE THE RULES IF THEY ARE BROKEN A PERSON SHOULD BE LET GO. PARENT’S/ KIDS ARE NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE ENOUGH TODAY FOR BREAKING SCHOOL RULES AND DRESS CODES. I THINK ALL KIDS/STAFF SHOULD HAVE A SCHOOL UNIFORM.SHOES TOO.SPANKING DOESN’T TEACH ACCOUNTABILITY/PROBLEM SOLVEING TO KIDS.

I disagree with you Rachael, spanking or paddling was, is and always will be the most effective discipline in school whether it’s middle or high school. Paddle swats work if they are used right. I was paddled when I was in high school 7 years ago and I believe the lessons I learned from it made me a better person in the long run.

as a cheerleader myself, this disgusts me. not only are they making themselves look bad, but they are reflecting bad on their school, and ultimately their community. These girls just proved that even the littlest bit of leeway and we can do ANYTHING WE WANT. its just really sad. IF there was ANYONE with attitude like that on any of the teams in my city, they would be removed with no chance to cheer AGAIN. and it would be fair, cheerleaders need to get along with people, listen and know their boundaries. These girls pushed it Way to far, and because the prinipal was the one squad members mom it made it harder to do anything about it, because all parents think their child is “an angel”. It was great to see that the 5th and final coach who was run off went public, because if they didn’t who would have stopped these monstrosities that they are calling girls? In my opinions it was they girls, and the principals fault…both actions were wrong, and now appropriate actions have been taken, hopefully the ex-principal never works near her daughter again! Thoses girls have just made cheerleading reps even worse then they already are!
